IT managers looking for a more consistent platform for developing applications across mobile devices got a glimmer of hope when four major manufacturers--NWC, Samsung, Motorola, and Panasonic--joined two carriers to form a group dedicated to promote efforts to standardize versions of--and the adoption of--Linux on mobile phones. The industry group, known as the LiMo Foundation, is a non-profit organization with open membership. The foundation's ultimate goal is a standard Linux platform for mobile phone application development, a goal that could make life much easier for IT managers charged with porting enterprise applications to a mobile phone platform.
