Ready for 802.16m? According to the IEEE, you might need to get ready. By 2009, the standards committee plans to have a final version of the new spec ready--a spec that they anticipate could replace both data and cellular phone networks. The 802.16m standard is designed to be fully backwards-compatible with the current 802.16e WiMAX standard and is set to include technologies that will increase speeds to gigabit levels. Much of the proposed standard is built on existing technology, but significant political questions remain--having groups like the ITU (the current cellular technology standards group) buy into an IEEE spec may be more difficult than any engineering problem.
