Talk.co launches cross-platform chat app for enterprise users
Talk.co is rolling out a new cross-platform mobile chat application for the enterprise, enabling co-workers to securely communicate across devices running Apple's iOS and Google's Android as well as the desktop.
The free Talk.co app allows employees to chat privately in a one-on-one context or within larger groups. Users may create customized groups dedicated to specific departments, projects or events and message anyone with a matching company email domain. Colleagues may share photos, videos and web links within chats, keeping tabs on the conversation via instant alerts distributed to mobile devices and PCs.
The team behind professional networking service BranchOut developed Talk.co. The firm has raised $49 million in funding from investors including Accel Partners, Redpoint Ventures, Mayfield Fund, Norwest Venture Partners and Floodgate.
Mobile users across the globe will send 41 billion over-the-top mobile messages per day by the end of 2013 using apps like Talk.co, compared to an average of 19.5 billion peer-to-peer short message service interactions, according to a forecast issued this spring by research firm Informa.
While Informa notes there were about 3.5 billion SMS users worldwide as of 2012, compared to about 586.3 million users of OTT free messaging apps, OTT traffic has already eclipsed SMS in terms of daily messaging volume. Consumers sent an average of 19.1 billion OTT messages per day in 2012, compared to 17.6 billion messages via SMS. OTT messaging app users send an average of 32.6 OTT messages each day, compared to just 5 SMS daily, Informa added.
