Microsoft revamps Yammer app for iPad, deepens email interoperability
Microsoft is overhauling its Yammer enterprise social networking platform, rolling out a retooled version for Apple's iPad tablet and expanding functionality across its Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 operating systems.
Microsoft acquired Yammer in mid-2012 for $1.2 billion in cash. The app enables employees to share conversations, content and business data in a single, secure hub, enabling designated users to collaborate on projects regardless of their location.
In an interview with IDG News Service, Microsoft Office general manager Jared Spataro said the company is currently in the process of integrating the Yammer cloud suite into its SharePoint collaboration server and other products across the Office product portfolio.
In tandem with the integration effort, Microsoft is revamping Yammer's iPad app to deliver a simplified, more intuitive user experience, concurrently adding Live Tiles and an improved inbox to the Windows versions.
Spataro said Microsoft is also deepening interoperability between Yammer and email systems, enabling users to participate in Yammer group discussions across various messaging platforms without maintaining a Yammer account.
Yammer currently sends an email notification to individuals mentioned in a Yammer conversation or mailed a direct message. The new features support interaction with any email client and server, not just Microsoft's own Outlook and Exchange.
Many customers are still trying to identify the most effective way to integrate enterprise social networking with email, Spataro said. "They're looking for a mental model for how to use email and Yammer and how to think about those two worlds coming together, because not everyone jumps on Yammer or enterprise social networking at the same time."
