Mobile ROI not persuasive for many CIOs
Enterprise mobility can be a serious investment, and a recent survey finds that many chief information officers just aren't convinced it's a good place to spend IT dollars.
Seventy-two percent of CIOs say the current cost of implementing and integrating mobile capabilities isn't worth the reward, finds a survey of 300 CIOs in the U.S. and U.K. The survey was conducted by Vanson Bourne on behalf of mobile application and management company Mobile Helix.
Eighty-six percent of those surveyed say their businesses don't see the strategic value of mobility efforts. Despite these doubts, 78 percent of enterprises have a mobility strategy, say CIOs.
While CIOs acknowledge that enterprise mobility can be transformative--specifically mobile access to enterprise applications like customer relationship management, enterprise resource planning and SharePoint--they fear the complexity of implementation.
"[Sixty-six] percent of CIOs say that they think that it's too complex, and 72 percent say it's too costly to integrate mobile innovations into legacy applications," says the survey.
In a press release (.pdf) related to the survey, Mobile Helix President Matt Bancroft says cost concerns are warranted because widespread enterprise mobility is not fully mature and complexity challenges are natural; however, these issues should not cause organizations to ignore the enormous possibilities of mobility to improve business processes.
