Two-thirds of UK firms still limit their employees to company-owned mobile devices, according to a survey of 246 IT decision makers in the UK conducted by Computing magazine. Only 20 percent allow BYOD, and 14 percent have a "choose your own device" strategy. Many UK CIOs interviewed by Computing said that they view BYOD as a "flash-in-the-pan" driven by vendors and the tech media. "When it comes to technology, most organisations are innately conservative, especially if change means IT relinquishing control or where regulators have real bite," the report says. Microsoft's Windows Phone will establish itself as the third smartphone ecosystem behind Android and iOS, predicts research firm Strategy Analytics. At the same time, Firefox OS and Tizen will be the fastest growing mobile operating systems and will challenge Windows Phone in the coming years. Not mentioned by Strategy Analytics is BlackBerry, which appears to have abandoned the consumer market altogether after failing to strike a chord with its Z10 smartphone. >> Asia blamed for drop in SIM card shipments last year

Mobile device SIM card shipments fell 3.8 percent last year to 4.94 billion, primarily due to contraction in the Asian market, according to the latest stats from ABI Research. Several factors led to the decline in Asia, including India's decision to require ID and registration for the purchase of pre-paid SIMs. "This had the single most dramatic impact of any factor last year and resulted in a massive decline in SIM cards sold in the country," ABI observes. This combined with a slowdown in China prompted a 10 percent decline in the Asian market last year. Read more about SIM card shipments.

>> American Eagle inks mobile shopping deal with Shopkick

American Eagle Outfitters inked a partnership with Shopkick for a mobile app that will detect when customers enter American Eagle Outfitters clothing stores and deliver coupons for the latest deals, according to a report by IDG News Service. Shopkick makes transmitters that communicate with smartphones using Bluetooth signals and mobile shopping apps for Android and iOS devices. The Shopkick ShopBeacon transmitter uses Apple's iBeacon protocol. American Eagle's program will be the largest iBeacon deployment by a clothing retailer, according to IDG News Service. >> Mobile printing poses IT risks, survey finds

A full 70 percent of UK firms are either currently using mobile printing or planning to use it, according to a survey of 1,000 IT decision makers in the UK by document management firm Altodigital. However, only 17 percent of employees are using company-approved mobile printing software, which opens up the firm to IT risks, the study, cited in an Information Age article, cautions. The most common IT risks are network security breaches or viruses, network and connectivity issues and lack of email or internet access. Read more on the Altodigital survey.
