Mobile muscles in on media dominance

Is mobile poised to become the biggest media and advertising channel in the world? Yes it is, according to a recent article by Business 2 Community.

Just to prove the point, Business 2 Community backed up the claim with 25 examples of recent forecasts about the mobile market, mobile habits and mobile advertising.

Consider some highlights from the research and projections from various sources, all cited in the article:

Mobile ad market:
Mobile ad spending increased by 75 percent in 2013, according to Ad Age. The amount of mobile ad spending in 2014 is expected to reach $13.1 billion, according to Mashable. Spending on paid-search ads using Google for smartphones and tablets increased by 112 percent and 113 percent, respectively, last year, according to Tab Times.

Mobile penetration:
Driving all this is the proliferation of mobile devices. There are currently more mobile devices on earth than there are people, according to Super Monitoring. The average adult spends 141 minutes per day on a mobile device, notes Ad Age. Around 44 percent of cell phone users admit to sleeping with their cell phone at one time or another in order to not miss an important call, according to Super Monitoring.

Mobile habits:
Consumers now spend 30 percent of their total time on mobile devices at social media networks, according to Tribal Café. Facebook now hosts 140 billion photos, which is 4 percent of all photos ever taken, says PMA Newsline.

Mobile commerce:
A full 80 percent of consumers plan to purchase merchandise by mobile devices in the next year, according to Super Monitoring. For retailers, not having a mobile optimized web site is like closing their store one day a week, warns Super Monitoring. All of this activity is expected to result in the U.S. retail mobile commerce market reaching a value of $52.17 billion this year, says eMarketer.
