Global spending on digital content passed $57 billion in 2013, up almost 30 percent from $44 billion in 2012, according to a joint study by IHS and App Annie. In Japan, the shift to smartphone and tablet apps is disrupting established digital content players in the Japanese market, the study notes. Large gains in game app spend in Japan and South Korea were key drivers in the growth in mobile apps. Alcatel-Lucent is working with Red Hat to virtualize mobile networks using network functions virtualization technology, reports IDG News Service. Advantages of virtualized mobile network include lower costs and faster new service deployments. Alcatel-Lucent is using Red Hat's Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform to power the underlying CloudBand platform, which also has integrated SDN functionality from Nuage Networks, the report notes. Alcatel-Lucent and China Mobile planned to demonstrate a virtualized voice over LTE offering at next week's Mobile World Congress. Read more on virtualized mobile networks.

Shipments of streaming music-enabled car infotainment systems are forecast by ABI Research to exceed 66 million units by the end of 2019. This would represent 93 percent of all connected automotive infotainment system shipments. "FM broadcasting still dominates in-car listening today, but it is likely that this will gradually diminish in favor of streamed radio and music services as an increasing number of cars become connected," comments Gareth Owen, principal analyst at ABI Research. The number of unique visitors to UK mobile newspaper sites rose 39 percent year-over-year, and the number of page views increased 63 percent year-over-year in December, according to comScore GSMA Mobile Media Metrics. Visitors to mobile newspaper sites were more likely to be younger, with 18- to 34-year-olds accounting for 45 percent of consumers who accessed news sites via mobile, according to a report on the stats by eMarketer.
