Some marketers who are having trouble with the transition to mobile are simply taking desktop ads and migrating them over to mobile devices, resulting in poor performance and damage to brand perception, warns Mobile Marketer. "Repeating banner ads at microscopic size doesn't do the brand or the business any favors," Tom Eslinger, worldwide creative director of digital at Saatchi & Saatchi, tells the publication. "Everything is heading to high-level personalized messages that are tuned to time, place, activity and mindset, and to get there we need to look at how we can make insightful ideas with the customer at the center," Eslinger adds. Freescale Semiconductor has unveiled a new microcontroller called Kinetis KLO3 MCU, which has a 32-bit ARM chip that is 15 percent smaller but 10 percent more powerful than its previous chip, reports Computerworld. The chip is well suited for wearable devices as well as machine-to-machine (M2M) devices, both of which require more power in less space. With its lightweight embedded operating, KLO3 provides data connections to other devices, such as apps that use a more general purpose processor. Read more on the Freescale chip.

Tablet sales increased 68 percent last year, reaching 195.4 million units, according to the latest stats from Gartner. Apple's share of the tablet market shrank to 36 percent, compared with a 53 percent market share in 2012. Android made big gains, particularly in the low-end tablet market, increasing from a 46 percent market share in 2012 to a 62 percent market share in 2013. "As the Android tablet market becomes highly commoditized, in 2014, it will be critical for vendors to focus on device experience and meaningful technology and ecosystem value--beyond just hardware and cost--to ensure brand loyalty and improved margins," says Roberta Cozza, research director at Gartner. Sales of wireless local access network gear set a record in the fourth quarter of 2013, reaching $1.2 billion, according to Infonetics Research. Sales of higher-speed 802.11ac access points (APs) took off in the second half of the 2013, making up 10 percent of AP revenue. "Once these products became available in the second half of 2013, we saw intense interest from buyers…That's a very good start out of the gate for 802.11ac, which bodes well for 2014," says Matthias Machowinski, directing analyst for enterprise networks and video at Infonetics. In an effort to reinvigorate its stock price, Apple plans to expand its product line-up beyond its traditional personal computers, smartphones, tablets and media players, CEO Tim Cook told shareholders on Friday, AP reports. Cook said that Apple invested close to $4.5 billion in research and development in the previous fiscal year and closed 23 acquisitions in the past 16 months.
