Mobile apps dominate mobile web in terms of consumer device time
Mobile apps, once a novelty for early smartphone adopters, have become the main way that U.S. consumers spend their time on mobile devices.
According to the latest stats from Flurry, mobile apps currently command 86 percent of the average U.S. consumer's time spent on their mobile device, or 2 hours and 19 minutes per day out of a total of 2 hours and 42 minutes per day.
The mobile web dropped to 14 percent of the average U.S. consumer's time spent on their mobile device--a mere 22 minutes per day.
In 2013, mobile apps took up 80 percent of the U.S. consumer's device time and mobile web was able to muster 20 percent.
Gaming apps were the most popular, capturing 32 percent of the average U.S. consumer's time on device. Social and messaging apps took up 24 percent to 28 percent of device time, with Facebook leading that category.
Entertainment and utility apps maintained their positions at 8 percent each, while productivity apps saw their share double from 2 percent to 4 percent of the time spent, according to Flurry stats.
"The data tells a clear story that apps, which were considered a mere fad a few years ago, are completely dominating mobile, and the browser has become a single application swimming in a sea of apps," says Simon Khalaf in a Flurry blog post.
