3 types of IT certifications to help ensure mobile mastery

With increased adoption of mobility in the enterprise has come a need for more IT professionals with skills in the area. That has placed growing importance on certifications for mobile technology skills.

"Managers need a well-developed and skilled workforce to tackle today's omnipresent mobile issues, while employees feel more confident in supporting business and IT functions if they receive proper training and experience," notes an article at IT World.

There are a variety of mobile certifications available in the market now, some of which are of more value to hiring managers than others. The article gives a rundown on some of the more common certifications, the cost to obtain them and where they provide the greatest value.

IT managers looking to obtain talent with the best mobile certifications or competitively compensate those that have them should be aware of the following:

>> MTA Mobile Development Fundamentals

This certification program verifies an individual's mastery of Windows Phone mobile devices, networked data and data stores, and the ability to evaluate mobile programming code in XNA, Visual Basic .NET, HTML5, XAML and C# .NET. The cost is $69 for the exam. It can be taken through Certiport, but non-students can sign up at Prometric.

>> Mobile Development Institute (MDI)

This non-profit organization offers three mobile certifications, each entry-level. They are the MDC Certified Developer for Apple iOS, Google Android and Blackberry. To qualify to take the exam, an IT pro should have already published at least one mobile app on the respective platform. Each certification requires one exam, which costs $375.

>> Oracle Certification Program (OCP)

One of the largest certification programs, with more than 200 individual certifications available. Mobile certifications include the Java ME Mobile Application Developer (formerly known as the Sun Certified Mobile Application Developer). IT pros pursing this certification should be proficient at developing apps for smartphones and other mobile devices, and with the Java Technology for Wireless Industry (JTWI) specifications. A single exam is required for the certification, which costs $245.
