Norwegian Web browser firm Opera Software has agreed to buy AdColony, a U.S.-based mobile video ad platform, for $245 million, Reuters reports. The acquisition is expected to boost Opera's position in the mobile ad market. "AdColony is a natural fit for Opera and our mobile advertising subsidiary, Opera Mediaworks. This acquisition will augment our services with a robust specialization around mobile video--the fastest growing segment within the mobile advertising industry," says Lars Boilesen, chief executive of Opera. Mobile app retention and engagement are on the rise, according to data from Localytics cited by eMarketer. The research firm found that the percentage of mobile apps opened just once dropped from 26 percent to 20 percent between March 2011 and March 2014. In addition, the percentage of mobile users launching an app 11 times or more increased from 26 percent to 39 percent during the same time period. Read more.

The European Union antitrust authority is expected to rule on Apple's $3 billion acquisition of Beats Electronics and Beats Music by the end of July, Reuters reports. Beats Electronics makes headphones, speakers and software, while Beats Music operates a music streaming business. The EU can either clear the deal or require concessions if it believes the transaction would pose competition issues in Europe. Read more.

New materials and better production processes are spurring growth in the market for touch sensors, which are used in smartphones and tablets, according to the latest data from NPD DisplaySearch. "Metal mesh, sliver nanowires, and other new materials will be used in the production of larger displays with better sheet resistance at affordable prices, and these new materials might be used for curved or flexible-touch sensors soon," says Shoko Oi, deputy director of touch panel and emerging display research for NPD.
