Employers: 'BYOD' means you're on 'your own'

It comes as no surprise that a growing number of organizations have decided to allow bring-your-own-device (BYOD) practices. But along with that acceptance is a firm stance that employees are on their own.

Pay for the device? No way, say employers.

Troubleshoot your device problems? That's not our job, say employers.

"Companies are taking a decidedly hands-off approach when it comes to their employees' mobile devices," notes an article at Baseline Magazine. Citing recent research from Ring Central, the article notes that employees are truly on their own as the "your own" portion of BYOD suggests.

Among the findings of the Ring Central research cited in the Baseline article:

  • 76 percent of professionals surveyed said their company does not reimburse them for using their personal phone for business.
  • 73 percent said they are on their own when it comes to troubleshooting and supporting their device, with no help from their employers.
  • 72 percent of respondents are not concerned about security issues affecting the personal devices they use for work.
  • About one-third of the respondents spend at least one hour at work doing personal tasks with their mobile device.
  • The number one activity that employees do with their personal device at work is texting family and friends (cited by 71 percent), followed by texting for work (47 percent), and going on social media (37 percent).
  • 27 percent of the professionals work beyond the traditional 9-to-5 workday two or three days a week, and 35 percent do so every day thanks to their mobile device.
  • Nearly two-fifths work at least three hours on a weekend, and only one-fifth do no work on the weekend.
