Sybase launches iAnywhere Mobile Office

Sybase has announced a new version of its iAnywhere Mobile Office, an enterprise-centric solution offering email, calendar, tasks, and contacts, as well as corporate directory lookup. In addition to the availability of native clients for Microsoft's Windows Mobile and Nokia's S60 platform, the new version will also be available on the iPhone. The iPhone client can be downloaded directly from Apple's App Store.

I have not had the opportunity to test drive the iAnywhere Mobile Office yet. Based on press information that I received though, an obvious advantage, where the iPhone and Symbian platforms are concerned, is the on-board encryption for all enterprise data contained within the application. Of course, some might argue that the risk of device loss remains unaddressed since other personal data and applications remain untouched.

Whatever the case, the iAnywhere Mobile Office's support for multiple platforms puts it in a central position where device management and administration is concerned. The press releases don't furnish sufficient technical information, but it appears that the requisite iAnywhere Mobile Office server performs the role of a NOC, channeling data to enabled devices for secure communications. This is performed within the need for VPN--lessening undue drain on device battery performance.
