Spotlight: ComScore report explains RIM's fall

ComScore publishes quarterly statistics on the makeup and direction of the mobile industry. This includes a detailed breakdown on what hardware platforms occupy segments of the market, what the market share is for each type of smartphone and how people use their devices. The February report is particularly noteworthy because it details RIM's (NASDAQ: RIMM) precipitous fall from dominance. It may also explain why RIM is having to fight so hard to remain relevant to users outside the Fortune 500 and the government. If you look at the usage information, you'll notice that while a huge number of people used their mobile devices to listen to music, send text messages or engage in social networking, email and phone calls don't appear on the list.
