The biggest news in the past week has been the news that Google is jumping into the wireless service provider market, although it's a small jump at this point. It's put itself into the running to deliver San Francisco's municipal WiFi system. The announcement has today's traditional and long-time telecommunications companies (from telephone to cable) a bit worried; and they should be, given Google's innovative nature and ability to make things happen.

But it shouldn't make users or enterprise IT nervous or upset. Competition is the best thing that could happen to wireless technology as it slowly envelopes business. Google may not end up being a major wireless vendor, but its foray into the field will prompt other telecom providers to shore and boost services, ignite some action on related technologies with companies who would love to partner with Google anyway they can, and hopefully keep decreasing the technology costs and increasing the security aspect. So go Google, go. - Judy [1]
