A Distimo study from May measured the number of downloads necessary to reach the top 25 paid or free apps in various categories from Apple's App Store. A mobile developer need only reach 130 paid downloads per day or 2,300 free downloads to reach the top 25 productivity apps list.

Perhaps this is why many of the biggest names in productivity apps still operate independently. Mobile bookmarking service Pocket boasts a team of eight members, for instance.
