'Avengers Initiative' - Best apps of September 2012
Most comic book-inspired games don't really adhere to the medium's storytelling roots. Sure, they transpose characters and settings from hit DC and Marvel titles, but the widescreen, world-building narrative possibilities inherent in serialized graphic storytelling are largely neglected in favor of self-contained gameplay experiences. Avengers Initiative vows to change all that, rolling out a series of interconnected installments that gradually reveal new characters, events and challenges adding up to a whole that's even greater than the sum of the title's individual parts.
If the first chapter of Avengers Initiative is any indication, mobile gamers are in for something truly special. The plot begins with the revelation that The Vault--a top‐secret S.H.I.E.L.D. facility hidden in the Rocky Mountains--has been compromised, releasing the super-villains and monsters imprisoned within back into the world at large. S.H.I.E.L.D. boss Nick Fury dispatches the Hulk to round up the bad guys while he races to assemble the other members of the Avengers team and find out who's behind the Vault break-in.
Simply by choosing to focus on the Hulk, Avengers Initiative promises the kind of mindless, rampaging destruction that made the character famous, and it delivers in spades--the battle scenes are over-the-top and intense, bolstered by exceptional HD graphics and responsive controls supporting a variety of attack and defense moves. You also can customize Hulk with additional armor, weapons and powers, earn achievements and unlock bonus content. Marvel's App Store page pledges Avengers Initiative will set "a new standard for mobile gaming," and while future updates will determine whether or not the title meets those lofty goals, it's off to an undeniably impressive beginning.
