Carrot - Best new Android, iOS apps of August 2013
Absolutely no one wants to get out of bed in the morning, and Carrot is the first alarm clock to acknowledge the situation. This "sentient" AI application eschews the shrill buzzes and beeps of conventional clocks in favor of witty dialogue and songs delivered in a charming but slightly twisted robotic voice.
Carrot users set their alarm time by swiping up or down, then dragging to the right or left. When it's time to wake up, the app urges them to get out bed with bribes (e.g., the promise of ice cream for breakfast) or signature tunes like "Smile or Else" and "Won't You Be My Minion?" Ignore Carrot and fall back to sleep and she gets tough, however--she might even threaten to murder a kitten if you hit snooze one too many times. To turn Carrot off, you must complete a bizarre chore, like shaking your iPhone to clean the lab monkey cages, flipping it to mix a deadly neurotoxin or pinching the screen to grant sentience to a toaster.
Carrot looks great, it's easy to use and it includes unlockable bonus content like bedtime stories. Its YouTube launch trailer calls it "The first alarm clock that will make you actually look forward to waking up," and while that might be exaggerating things a bit, Carrot does take some sting out of starting the day, and that's a remarkable achievement in itself.
