Cloud Spin - Best new Android, iOS apps of August 2013
The flight simulator game Cloud Spin is a triumph of visual design and creativity. Built using Epic Games' Unreal Engine technology, it transports the player to exotic worlds that straddle the line between fantasy and reality, each rendered in amazingly lifelike 3D detail.
Cloud Spin stars Lucky, a daredevil rabbit who soars the skies in a fan-propelled flight suit. You guide Lucky as he divebombs through clouds and dodges obstacles ranging from ornamental pillars to cyberpunk zeppelins to spinning blades, journeying all the way from ancient Rome-inspired floating cities to neon-lit interstellar mazes. Each successive world is more demanding and more vividly imagined than the last, and the graphics are so impressive that you may find yourself selecting the free flight play mode as often as the achievement-based tournament option simply to absorb all the sights at your own speed.
Cloud Spin is relatively easy to play but difficult to master. The swipe-based user controls are smooth and responsive, but as the pace of gameplay accelerates, the twists and turns become frustratingly difficult to navigate. There are no shortcuts, either: To Skytrain Studios' credit, the game does not include any in-app purchases, further establishing Cloud Spin's credentials as good, clean family fun. You will believe a rabbit can fly.
