The Great Cookie Thief... A Sesame Street App Starring Cookie Monster
In February, Nielsen revealed that in tablet-owning households with children under 12, 57 percent say that their children use the tablet for educational purposes. In fact, educational purposes outrank every other activity measured on the iPad, aside from mobile gaming.
And the fastest-growing type of educational app are ones for toddlers and pre-school aged children (58 percent), according to a recent report, iLearn II: An Analysis of the Education Category on Apple's App Store, from the Joan Ganz Cooney Center.
Sesame Street has been a pioneer in combining children's education and entertainment since the 1960s. The Great Cookie Thief, originally a book published in 1977, can now be experienced by a new generation of young children as an interactive e-book.
The Great Cookie Thief teaches children reading basic skills by including automatic word highlighting and memory matching games to introduce new vocabulary. The interactive elements of the story include sticker and image creation and animations to keep kids coming back for a varied app experience.
