The Human Body - Best new Android, iOS apps of August 2013
The Human Body is an ingeniously conceived educational application that enables children ages four and older to explore what makes us all tick, complete with animated representations of our skeletal, muscular, nervous, circulatory, respiratory and digestive systems.
The first entry in Tinybop's Explorer's Library series, the Human Body enables children to interact with its subject matter in ways that books and videos simply can't match--the heart beats, intestines gurgle, lungs breathe and the skin feels. The app leverages the device's front camera to demonstrate vision, the microphone to illustrate hearing and the photo and music libraries to depict brain function. It even exploits device orientation features to drive home the effects of gravity. There's also a recording mode enabling kids and parents to ask each other questions, as well as a parental dashboard for viewing, saving and sharing conversations.
The Human Body isn't exactly Gray's Anatomy. The original illustrations are appealingly simple, and each lesson is conveyed with clarity and efficiency. But it never talks down to its intended audience, and it's smart enough that adults might even learn a thing or two. An app with both brains and heart (literally and figuratively), The Human Body is yet another compelling reminder of how mobile devices are rendering conventional textbooks obsolete.
