Amazon.com introduced new e-reader software that allows certain BlackBerry devices to access e-books.

Called the Kindle for BlackBerry, the free beta app is available for download from Amazon.com. Since Amazon.com introduced a Kindle app for the iPhone, BlackBerry users have asked for the same thing, said Amazon Kindle Vice President Ian Freed.

The software is compatible with the BlackBerry Bold, the Curve, Storm and Tour smartphones. The software uses Amazon.com's Whispersync technology, which saves and synchronizes a user's bookmarks across devices such as the Kindle, Kindle DX, iPhone, iPod touch, PC and BlackBerrys.

The online retailer said BlackBerry users who download the free app will be able to access more than 420,000 Kindle books as well as download titles directly from the Amazon Kindle Store.
