Android to pass iPad in tablet installed base, predicts ABI


The installed base of Android tablets is expected to pass that of iPads this year, predicts ABI Research.

Overall, tablet shipments are expected to rebound for the remainder of 2014 from a 30 percent decline in the first quarter, and sales are expected to top $85 billion this year, according to ABI data.

"We have yet to reach the top of the tablet market and with many world regions just now starting to adopt, the best is yet to come," says senior practice director Jeff Orr.

Research firm IDC sees a similar sequential decline in tablet sales, which dropped 35.7 percent in the first quarter. "The rise of large-screen phones and consumers who are holding on to their existing tablets for ever longer periods of time were both contributing factors to a weaker-than-anticipated quarter for tablets and 2-in-1s. In addition, commercial growth has not been robust enough to offset the slowing of consumer shipments," says Tom Mainelli, IDC program vice president for devices and displays.

At the same time, ABI expects Apple's iPad to remain the leading tablet brand this year, although Samsung continues to close the gap. Together, the two firms could control 70 percent of branded tablet shipments by year-end.

"Looking back over the past three years of the tablet boom, the leading vendor order has remained largely unchanged. Lenovo is the most obvious standout as it has executed tablet strategy well both in China and abroad," says Orr.

Tablet chipset suppliers are forecast by ABI to make in-roads into the Asia-Pacific tablet market. Intel expects 40 million devices to be powered by its processors, with many of those made in China and Taiwan. MediaTek, Qualcomm and Samsung are also making in-roads with tablets destined for the Asia-Pacific region.

China and India combined are expected to top 35 percent of tablet shipments in the Asia-Pacific region, says ABI. Chinese tablets made for Chinese consumers have been a major influence in the white box segment, and pressures are mounting as audiences seek local service and support.
