'Angry Birds' downloads, merchandise revenues top $106M in 2011

Angry Birds creator Rovio Mobile reported 2011 revenues of $106.3 million, fueled by game download activity as well as consumer product sales.

More than 648 million gamers downloaded Angry Birds and its spinoffs, Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Rio, in 2011. The total number of active monthly users across all platforms reached 200 million. Rovio's consumer products business, which includes both merchandising and licensing income, generated about 30 percent of the firm's total 2011 revenues. Rovio said it is working with more than 200 different licensing partners to create new products and services within the Angry Birds franchise.

In late March 2012, Rovio released Angry Birds Space on Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS and Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android mobile devices alongside desktop versions for Windows PCs and Apple's Mac platform. Angry Birds Space transplants the titular heroes and their pig opponents to new planets and zero gravity environments, complete with space footage filmed by NASA. Angry Birds Space reached the 50 million download milestone in its first 35 days of release, shattering Rovio's previous adoption records.

Rovio Mobile is poised to launch an animated Angry Birds series this fall, consisting of 52 short-form episodes running less than three minutes each. The company is planning an initial public offering on the Hong Kong stock exchange sometime in 2013.
