Apple addresses iPhone 4S bugs with iOS 6.1.1 update
Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is rolling out iOS 6.1.1, a software update designed to resolve a series of bugs afflicting iPhone 4S owners following the recent release of iOS 6.1.
Apple releases iOS 6.1.1
iOS 6.1.1 is optimized solely for iPhone 4S models; according to Apple, the update "fixes an issue that could impact cellular performance and reliability for iPhone 4S." The 968 MB release is currently available as a direct download here or as an over-the-air download.
Apple issued iOS 6.1 to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices two weeks ago. Some iPhone 4S owners soon began complaining the update accelerated battery drain and prompted some overheating issues, and over the weekend, British operator Vodafone even warned subscribers not to upgrade iPhone 4S models after determining the software triggered 3G connectivity problems. "Some customers may occasionally experience difficulty in connecting to the network to make or receive calls or texts or to connect to the Internet," Vodafone wrote in a text message sent to subscribers. "While Apple's investigations continue, we would recommend that anyone who has not yet installed iOS 6.1 on their iPhone 4S should delay doing so until Apple has confirmed that their problem has been fixed."
Some iPhone 5 owners have also reported battery life issues after downloading iOS 6.1. Apple has not responded to queries seeking to clarify whether it is working on a separate version of iOS 6.1.1 for iPhone 5 users.
iOS 6.1 extends international LTE support to 36 additional iPhone carrier partners and 23 additional iPad carriers across the globe, boosting Safari browsing, FaceTime video calls and iTunes and App Store download speeds. iOS 6.1 also adds voice-enabled Fandango movie ticketing support to the Siri voice assistant.
