Apple far outpaced Samsung Electronics (22 percent) and Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) (13 percent) on Millennial impressions during the second quarter, with its iPhone alone responsible for close to 16 percent of all impressions, followed in second by RIM's BlackBerry Curve at 5 percent. Despite the iPhone's dominance, Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android still led all operating systems with 46 percent of total impressions, ahead of Apple's iOS at 34 percent and BlackBerry at 15 percent.
Mobile games yielded more impressions than any other application category in the second quarter, ahead of music and entertainment apps. Science and technology apps captured the third spot, generating 15 times the impressions in the second quarter as they did in the first quarter of 2012. Millennial Media credited the leap to the number of year-end school exams taking place during the second quarter period.
Apple is expected to launch its new iPhone 5 today. Millennial Media notes that when the previous iPhone 4S reached stores in mid-October 2011, impressions for the device grew 200 percent after one week and more than 1800 percent after one full month of adoption.
Apple's media event begins at 1:00 pm ET/10:00 am PT. FierceWireless will keep you on top of all the Apple news as it breaks.
