Appropriate RFID
This week we have two stories on RFID and how its use is expanding. Now, I've said that I'm not a fan of RFID in identification documents because the security risks are too significant and the technology just isn't ready. That doesn't mean there aren't a lot of applications that are perfect for RFID. Adding RFID awareness to SAP's ERP suite should smooth the growth of inventory tagging for a lot of large and mid-sized companies. These companies will likely reach the same conclusions that Wal-Mart has: that RFID can help manage inventories and can make supply chains more efficient. With the right approach, using RFID doesn't just help control costs, it improves customer service and enables better relations with suppliers. RFID isn't bad technology--especially when it's used in appropriate applications. -Curtis
