Asus announced a new product called the Padfone that combines the functionality of an Android smartphone with an Android tablet.

The Padfone, expected to come to market around Christmas time, includes an Android smartphone that sits inside a tablet device. The tablet offers a larger screen, stereo speakers and an extended battery. However, the operating system and core are powered by the smartphone.

Asus said the OS can move seamlessly between the phone and the tablet when the phone is docked, enabling users to eliminate data transfer since all of the information is stored in the smartphone and simply moves to the tablet screen when the smartphone is docked. The marriage will also support the smartphone's cellular capabilities without the need for a second SIM card or data subscription.

Few other details were revealed. The cost of the duo should be a significant determining factor when it comes to uptake.
