AT&T launches retailer point of sale app for iOS


NEW ORLEANS--AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) introduced VeriFone GlobalBay Solutions, a point of sale application enabling retailers to leverage mobile commerce services to enhance the in-store shopping experience.

Available for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS platform, VeriFone GlobalBay Solutions enables sales associates armed with smartphones and tablets to scan items, apply coupons and discounts and process credit card transactions from any location in the store. Sales staff can also order and sell inventory items not available in the brick-and-mortar location, helping minimize lost sales opportunities. 

AT&T notes that businesses can customize the VeriFone GlobalBay Solutions app to meet their specific needs--for example, loading product images, video demonstrations, warranty information and related data directly onto the salesperson's device. Merchants also can integrate VeriFone GlobalBay Solutions with loyalty programs and other marketing efforts, complete with on-the-spot customer enrollment.

AT&T said that VeriFone GlobalBay Solutions is designed to integrate with existing point of sale systems. The carrier adds that businesses with out of date POS systems can move all of their payment processing to AT&T's cloud platform.

Last week, AT&T extended its its Mobile Barcode Services program to the small business segment, enabling SMBs to create, publish and manage their own 1D (UPC) and 2D (QR and Data Matrix) barcodes. AT&T will supply retailers and restaurants the tools to generate barcodes as well as customized, pre-built templates to create mobile landing pages that appear on the mobile device screen when consumers scan the code.

Small businesses can integrate the codes into their traditional marketing efforts, offering customers mobile access to coupons, special offers, contents, video demos and product information. Merchants can update the landing page content without tweaking or replacing the physical barcode; they can also track campaign effectiveness and receive demographic and location data from opt-in users.
