AT&T touts improved quality, streamlined pricing with rebranded Mobile TV
AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) is rebranding its U-Verse Live TV streaming service to the more succinct Mobile TV, also promising uniform pricing across all supported devices as well as superior video quality.
Available for iOS, Android and BlackBerry platforms, the free Mobile TV app features live and on-demand programming from network partners including ABC, Fox, NBC, ESPN, MTV, Comedy Central and the Disney Channel. Moving forward, Mobile TV will cost subscribers $9.99 per month across all smartphones; the operator previously billed Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone owners $11.99 a month.
AT&T customers also can add on three specialty packages: Urban Zone features programming from cable network BET, Paquete en Español móvil spotlights content from popular Hispanic networks and Playground TV Pack includes shows appealing to children. Each add-on is $4.99 per month.
Viewers can stream AT&T Mobile TV via Wi-Fi and over the operator's 3G & 4G LTE networks. Writing on the AT&T Consumer Blog, Executive Director of Marketing Management Rob Hyatt said subscribers viewing on a 4G LTE connection will enjoy "enhanced picture quality."
This isn't the first time AT&T has offered a "mobile TV" service. The carrier, along with Verizon Wireless, offered Qualcomm's MediaFLO broadcast mobile TV service until Qualcomm decided to shut the network down in 2011.
