Cisco widens lead over Aruba in enterprise Wi-Fi market
Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) posted a strong growth of 23.4 percent year-over-year for its enterprise Wi-Fi revenue in the first quarter of 2013, pushing its market share up to 52.9 percent, its highest share since the fourth quarter of 2010.
Aruba Networks (NASDAQ: ARUN) saw much slower growth--8.5 percent year-over-year--for its enterprise Wi-Fi revenue, according to the latest stats from IDC. HP (NYSE: HPQ), on the other hand, experienced a 12.4 percent year-over-year increase in its enterprise Wi-Fi revenue in the first quarter, boosting its market share slightly to 5.4 percent from 5.1 percent in the same quarter last year.
Fourth place Ruckus Wireless (NYSE: RKUS) achieved the highest growth rate, 24 percent year-over-year in the first quarter, "although this does reflect noticeable deceleration of year-over-year growth for Ruckus compared to previous quarters," IDC noted. Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) came in fifth.
Overall, the enterprise Wi-Fi market revenue grew at 19.3 percent year-over-year to $962 million, marking the 13th consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth of more than 15 percent.
"The explosion of mobile devices and the uptake of enterprise mobility applications continue to be top of mind for enterprise IT in terms of driving WLAN infrastructure growth across a wide range of enterprise verticals and use cases," said Rohit Mehra, vice president of network infrastructure, at IDC.
For its statistics, IDC uses the more generic term wireless local area network; Wi-Fi is WLAN equipment that complies with the Wi-Fi standard. Virtually all WLAN in the enterprise complies with that standard.
"While this quarter saw some slowing of growth in Wi-Fi infrastructure rollouts for mobile offload applications, the longer term trend of cellular operators and managed service providers leveraging Wi-Fi stays intact and will continue to boost additional growth in the coming years," he added.
IDC's stats are similar to figures published by Infonetics Research. As we reported last month, the enterprises Wi-Fi equipment market posted an 18 percent year-over-year revenue growth in the first quarter, reaching close to $1 billion in revenue.
