Clearwire, Sprint launch more WiMAX markets as Verizon's LTE launch looms
Clearwire and Sprint (NYSE: S), majority owner and wholesale provider of Clearwire, have launched WiMAX service in Cincinnati, Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio; Los Angeles and Miami. Sprint also launched WiMAX service in Washington, D.C. under the Sprint 4G brand. Clearwire has already been offering service there.
The two companies now cover 103 million potential subscribers in 68 markets. Competitor Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) plans to introduce Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband service in December in 38 markets and in more than 60 airports covering 110 million potential subscribers. Verizon has scheduled a teleconference conference today and may reveal that its footprint will be even larger.
Verizon's first LTE devices will be USB dongles, followed by other devices next year. Verizon said last month that its first LTE smartphone will be available in February, months earlier than the company had previously indicated.
