ComScore: Android eclipses 50% U.S. smartphone market share

More than half of all U.S. smartphone owners carry devices powered by Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android operating system, according to new data published by research firm comScore.

Android dominates 50.1 percent of the U.S. smartphone market, up from 46.9 percent in November and a leap of 17 percentage points compared to a year ago, comScore reports. Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS follows at 30.2 percent, increasing from 28.7 percent in November.

Research In Motion's (NASDAQ:RIMM) BlackBerry continues to slide, falling another 3.2 percentage points between November and February to make up 13.4 percent of the U.S. smartphone market. Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows platform dropped from 5.2 percent in November to 3.9 percent in February, and Symbian held firm at 1.5 percent.

More than 104 million U.S. subscribers owned smartphones during the three months ending in February 2012, up 14 percent over November 2011. Growing smartphone adoption corresponds with increasing mobile data consumption, with 74.8 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers using text messaging in February, up 2.2 percentage points over November. In addition, 49.5 percent of subscribers accessed downloaded applications, increasing 4.6 percentage points compared to three months' earlier, and 49.5 percent of users browsed the mobile web, up 4.8 percentage points.

ComScore states that 36.1 percent of mobile subscribers accessed a social networking site or blog in February (up 3.1 percentage points), 32.3 percent played games (up 2.6 percentage points) and 24.8 percent listened to music on their phone (up 3.1 percentage points).
