Confidential business information at risk on unprotected mobile phones

A survey of 600 commuters at London railway stations has found that 99 percent of people use their personal phones for some sort of business use. This is in spite of the fact that 26 percent admitted to having been specifically instructed by their employer not to do so.

Below is an excerpt of the most interesting statistics revealed by the survey:

  • 35 percent receive and send business emails
  • 30 percent use them as a business diary
  • 17 percent download corporate information, such as documents and spreadsheets
  • 23 percent store customers information

While this should have been a positive case study in the increasing use of mobile technology in business, the survey also revealed an alarming trend: About 40 percent of users do not even have a simple password in place to protect the above information. While the study does list some best practices for mobile use, for end-users with unsecured devices, the onus to better security really lies with them.
