Dell may be releasing a smartphone soon

Anonymous sources have told the Wall Street Journal that Dell is working on, and has created prototypes of various standard smartphone designs. If the rumors are to be believed, Dell has been working on this project for more than a year, which includes talking to software developers, component makers and device manufacturers.

The company's plans are not final, though if Dell decides to go ahead, then it is likely that the smartphone will launched at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain next month. However, analysts are cautious, noting the intense competition from the likes of the Apple iPhone, RIM BlackBerry and the upcoming Palm Pre means that Dell's offering will have to be "spectacular" in order to compete.

Dell is wise to recognize the shifting tides but will face formidable competition from the big players in the smartphone market who are already hard at work to offer more features to usurp PC usage. Dexterra has found customers are increasingly open to replacing their PCs or laptops with smartphones for employees in the field; a trend we imagine will only grow as smart phones become more capable and enterprises recognize the cost savings and productivity gains that are possible by mobilizing tasks related to legacy back office systems like CRM, ERP, and others. But what can Dell offer smartphone users beyond what the established players in the market already offer? Apple surprised us in 2007, perhaps Dell will surprise us all again in 2009.

P.S. Mobile World Congress is this month (February); less than 2-weeks away, kicking off on the 16th!
