Dell offers first EMM product, following Michael Dell's plan
As part of Michael Dell's new strategy to refocus the company he founded on enterprise software and services, Dell launched its first comprehensive enterprise mobility management (EMM) product on Wednesday.
Dell's EMM product brings together mobile device, app and content management capabilities and a secure remote access gateway into one unified platform, Dell explains in a release.
The EMM platform enables IT to configure and define security and compliance policies for iOS and Android smartphones; Windows, Android and iOS tablets; Linux, Mac and Windows laptops and desktops; and thin and zero cloud clients.
During his battle with billionaire investment Carl Icahn to take Dell private, Michael Dell said he wanted to retool Dell from a PC maker to an enterprise software and services business. He cited trends in cloud, mobility, virtualization and software-defined networking that are revolutionizing the data center, fueling a shift toward outsourced and cloud-based delivery models.
"Despite Dell's investments over several years, the company's transformation is still in its initial stages. Significant incremental investment is required to extend end-to-end IT solutions capabilities, expand sales coverage, compete in emerging markets, invest for growth in the PC and tablet business and simplify and enhance the customer experience," Michael Dell said in a presentation to shareholders in June.
Michael Dell succeeded in convincing shareholders to back his plan over Icahn. Joined by Silver Lake Partners and other investors, Michael Dell took Dell private at the end of October in transaction valued at $25 billion.
Launching a comprehensive EMM product fits well into Michael Dell's plan, says Roger Bjork, director of Dell enterprise mobility solutions.
"This is Dell's approach to managing all of the types of devices in your environment, whether PC or mobile, independent of the ownership model, whether corporate liable, BYOD or something in between," Bjork tells FierceMobileIT.
