Digi International and Sprint (NYSE: S) are partnering to offer WiMAX routers for remote site and sensor network connectivity. The devices are designed for high-bandwidth machine-to-machine applications such as digital signage, video surveillance and mobile computing, according to Digi.

Sprint and Clearwire have certified the routers. "4G dramatically increases the bandwidth and lowers the latency of wireless WAN connections," said Larry Kraft, senior vice president of global sales and marketing, with Digi International, in a statement.

The Digi Connect WAN 4G includes an RS-232 serial, USB and Ethernet, while the ConnectPort X4 4G features Zigee to WiMAX and therefore can connect to ZigBee-enabled devices and sensors. Digi is touting the routers for use with transportation, fleet management, outdoor street lighting, traffic control signal, security and energy management.

The router also comes with an integrated cloud computing platform to enable remote device management and to integrate device information to a user's back-end system. Router pricing starts at $660.
