Disney's 'Toy Story 3' iPhone app tops 1.7M downloads in first month

The Walt Disney Company announced its Toy Story 3 application for Apple's iPhone and iPod touch exceeded 1.7 million downloads a month after its App Store debut. The Toy Story 3 app enables fans play, personalize and stay connected to their favorite characters from the Pixar animated franchise, and features both free and premium content; Disney introduced the app on June 15, timed to coincide with the film's theatrical release. Toy Story 3 is now closing in on box office profits totaling $350 million.

Earlier this month, Disney acquired music game developer Tapulous, the startup behind the bestselling iPhone series Tap Tap Revenge. More than 30 percent of iPhone and iPod touch users have downloaded the 99-cent Tap Tap Revenge since Tapulous was founded in 2008--late last year, the firm said its sales were approaching $1 million per month, offering evidence that at least some developers can earn a very handsome living via Apple's App Store. In addition to premium downloads, Tap Tap Revenge generates revenue via advertising and in-app music purchases. Its game portfolio also includes Riddim Ribbon and Tap Tap Radiation, the latter a smash on Apple's iPad tablet.
