Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Play revenues surged 67 percent during the previous six months, far ahead of Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) App Store at 15 percent, analytics firm Distimo reports.

"The Apple App Store was still the larger market compared to Google Play in July 2013 in terms of total revenue. However, Google Play's cut has increased significantly over the past few months," Distimo said. "While only 25 percent of the combined revenue came from Google Play in February 2013, this share went up by eight percentage points to 33 percent in July 2013. In revenue terms the Apple App Store was still twice as large as Google Play."

The United States still leads all markets on iOS and Android app spending, followed by Japan and South Korea, both of which Distimo credited for the spike in Google Play revenues. The United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Canada, France, Russia and Italy round out the top 10. "A notable point is that in some countries, like Russia, more money was spent in the Apple App Store for iPad than in the Apple App Store for iPhone, while overall more money was spent on iPhone apps," Distimo said.

King.com's Candy Crush Saga was the top revenue-generating iOS and Android application in July 2013. Supercell's Clash of Clans and Hay Day claimed the second and third spots in the App Store countdown, followed by GungHo's Puzzle & Dragons and Kabam's The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-earthPuzzle & Dragons also ranked second on Google Play's top revenue-generating roll call, ahead of two titles for South Korea's Kakao gaming platform and free messaging app LINE.

Gameloft's Despicable Me: Minion Rush and Candy Crush Saga topped the App Store's most downloaded free app charts in July, trailed by Google Maps, King.com's Pet Rescue Saga and Kaarel Kirsipuu's Can You Escape. WhatsApp Messenger generated the most downloads on Apple's paid app charts, followed by Mojang's Minecraft--Pocket Edition, PunchBox Studios' Contra: Evolution, Disney's Where's My Mickey? and Apalon's Pimp Your Screen.

Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) led all free app downloads in Google Play during July, followed by WhatsApp Messenger, Despicable MeCandy Crush Saga and the standalone Facebook Messenger. SwiftKey Keyboard topped all paid Android downloads, ahead of Titanium Track's Titanium Backup PRO, Minecraft--Pocket Edition, TelsaCoil Software's Nova Launcher Prime and Max MP's Poweramp Full Version Unlocker.
