Distimo: 'Puzzle & Dragons' continues to dominate iOS, Android revenues
GungHo Online Entertainment's Puzzle & Dragons reigns as the top revenue-generating application worldwide across both Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS and Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android, app analytics firm Distimo reports.
Puzzle & Dragons outgrossed all other iOS applications in Apple's App Store in May 2013, leapfrogging past King.com's Candy Crush Saga (which held steady in second place) and Supercell's Clash of Clans (which dropped from first in April to third last month). Supercell's Hay Day is next, with Kabam's The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-earth rounding out the top five.
"The most revenue generating applications are frequently free apps with in-app purchases," Distimo said. "All applications in this top 5 use the freemium business model. Looking at the revenue on a more detailed level e.g. for Candy Crush Saga, we can point out that two-thirds of the revenue are generated through the iPad app, and one-third comes in from the iPhone app."
On Google Play, Puzzle & Dragons remains in the top spot for the third consecutive month. LINE Corporation is in second and third with its LINE Free Calls & Messages and WIND runner, trailed by Colopl's new free sports game in Japan and Candy Crush Saga, which slipped from fourth in April to fifth.
In terms of total free downloads worldwide, Candy Crush Saga continues to set the pace on iOS, followed by Kabam's new Fast & Furious 6: The Game, Gameloft's Iron Man 3: The Official Game, Google's YouTube and Rovio Entertainment's Angry Birds Friends. Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) leads on Android, trailed by WhatsApp Messenger, Facebook Messenger, Skype and the ubiquitous Candy Crush Saga.
WhatsApp Messenger continues to lead all paid applications on iOS, followed by the new Warner Bros. game Heads Up!, Mojang's Minecraft--Pocket Edition, Igor Kalicinski's Survivalcraft and Paul Salameh's Pou. SwiftKey Keyboard leads on Android, trailed by Titanium Track's Titanium Backup PRO Key, Max MP's Poweramp Full Version Unlocker, TeslaCoil Software's Nova Launcher Prime and Minecraft--Pocket Edition.
