eBay: Mobile generated 30% of new users in Q2
Almost 30 percent of new eBay users added in the second quarter of 2013 signed up via mobile device, the digital marketplace said Wednesday.
"We're a mobile commerce leader, adding more than 3 million new customers in Q2 through mobile," eBay President and Chief Executive Officer John Donahoe said during the company's earnings call, according to a Seeking Alpha transcript. "eBay and PayPal each expect to do $20 billion of mobile commerce and payments volume this year. And our global commerce platforms are a competitive advantage enabling commerce to happen anytime, anywhere."
Consumers who sign up on mobile tend to skew younger than other eBay users, added Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President Robert Swan. "So we like that," Swan said. "They may have less disposable income, but they are younger and we love the lifetime value."
eBay posted second quarter revenues of $3.9 billion, up 14 percent year-over-year. Total company-enabled commerce volume grew 21 percent for the quarter to $51 billion. Gross merchandise volume, excluding vehicles, increased 13 percent to $18 billion.
eBay's PayPal commerce service now supports 132 million digital wallets in the cloud across 193 countries. "Mobile is enabling seamless shopping experiences for consumers and PayPal is focused on delivering great product experiences for merchants and consumers anytime, anywhere," Donahoe said. "For example, RadioShack went live in Q2 with PayPal's point of sale options in the majority of their U.S. locations."
In May, PayPal also launched Cash for Registers, a program that offers free credit, debit card, check and PayPal processing to any U.S. merchant that swaps out its existing point-of-sale system in favor of the PayPal Here m-commerce system. PayPal is waiving transaction fees for up to $20,000 of transactions per month through January 2014 for the first 10,000 merchants who qualify, Donahoe said.
