eBay offering mobile-exclusive deals over Thanksgiving weekend

eBay is looking to capitalize on the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend shopping frenzy by rolling out hundreds of mobile-exclusive deals enabling smartphone and tablet users to avoid crowded brick-and-mortar stores.

The mobile effort spotlights eBay's Holiday Collective, an alliance between the digital commerce giant and designers including Jonathan Adler, Billy Reid, Chris Benz, Fallon, Ruffian, Steven Alan and Tibi. Smartphone and tablet owners can shop limited-edition gifts like men's and women's apparel, jewelry, travel and electronics accessories and home décor. eBay Mobile Vice President Steve Yankovich told Mobile Commerce Daily that consumers will be able to shop Holiday Collective offers via eBay's Fashion mobile application 24 hours in advance of the on-sale date. eBay also will introduce a holiday gift guide designed exclusively for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone, complete with suggestions from 25 tastemakers.

eBay is additionally teaming with spa chain Bliss to offer Black Friday shoppers in metropolitan U.S. cities free manicures, pedicures and foot massages while they hunt for deals and browse personalized recommendations on mobile devices.

Speaking to Reuters, Yankovich said eBay will launch 20 exclusive deals through its eBay Mobile app at 5:23 pm ET Thanksgiving Day, with another 20 offers rolling out for West Coast residents at 5:23 pm PT. eBay recently surveyed more than 1,000 U.S. consumers about their holiday shopping plans: More than two-thirds said holiday sales should begin immediately following Thanksgiving dinner, and respondents said their meals would end, on average, at 5:23 pm.

Research firm comScore reports the value of digital commerce transactions completed on Thanksgiving has increased 128 percent to $479 million over the past five years, outpacing the growth of Black Friday, Cyber Monday and other signature holiday shopping days.

eBay reported revenues of $3.4 billion for the third quarter of 2012, up 15 percent over the year-ago quarter. eBay adds that active users increased 10 percent year-over-year, its fastest growth since 2007, with 800,000 new shoppers making their first purchase via mobile device. Downloads of eBay's suite of mobile apps have now eclipsed the 100 million mark globally, and the company is on pace to reach $10 billion in mobile gross merchandise volume in 2012, up from $5 billion a year ago.
