eBay trials same-day shipping service via iOS app
eBay is trialing a service enabling Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS device users to order merchandise from local retailers and receive their shipment later that same day.
The new eBay Now, available for download for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, enables consumers who purchase items priced at $25 or more to add same-day delivery for an additional $5 shipping fee. Most orders arrive within an hour, eBay said. During the beta period, which is currently limited to select merchant partners with locations in the San Francisco market, eBay is offering a $15 discount on each user's first Now purchase and waiving shipping fees on their first three orders.
Consumers can click here to sign up for the eBay Now beta. TechCrunch reports eBay will gauge user interest and activity to determine future product updates and market rollouts.
eBay is on pace to reach $10 billion in mobile gross merchandise volume in 2012, up from $5 billion a year ago. Downloads of eBay's mobile apps have now surpassed 90 million worldwide.
