One of today's QuickLink items deserves a little more attention than just a blip mention. A non-profit organization, started by two Sun employees, not only wants to bring Internet access to children in developing countries to expand their education, but they want to do it using solar-powered WiFi networks--a terrific 'green' idea given the proliferation of cell towers and nodes hitting our landscape. Green WiFi networks feature a a battery-powered router and a solar panel for charing the battery. The nodes are put on roofs and the WiFi signals transmit over a grid via the 802.11 networking standard. While outside conditions are the main issue with such a system it seems the innovative developers behind the technology have figured out how to weather such obstacles. A full-scale pilot of the system is set to start soon and the effort will require more funding. It's just such a terrific idea for countries where electrical is scarce. If you get a chance read more about the project and the men behind it at CNET/News. - Judy
