Facebook Timeline comes to Android, but not iOS

Facebook expanded its new Timeline profile feature to mobile, making it available to Android smartphone users before introducing it to Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS.

Facebook Timeline offers users a reverse-chronological view of their Facebook history, organizing posts and photos to create a virtual scrapbook of their social networking experiences. "Mobile timeline starts with your unique cover photo," Facebook product manager Mick Johnson writes on The Facebook Blog. "As you scroll down, you'll see your posts, photos and life events as they happened, back to the day you were born. Photo albums and other posts are horizontally swipeable, so you can quickly view multiple photos or posts inline without leaving timeline. You can also swipe through the views at the top of your timeline to navigate to your map, photos, subscribers and more."

Johnson adds that Facebook posts now appear in different ways on the user's mobile timeline. Photos shared with friends are now larger, and maps depict social interactions as well as places visited.

Facebook Timeline is now available via Facebook for Android version 1.8.1 as well as the mobile web. The social network historically has introduced new mobile features to iOS before bringing them to Android; it is unknown when Timeline will roll out to iOS devices.

Facebook is the most popular mobile application across the Google-backed (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android mobile operating system, surpassing even Google-owned services like Gmail and YouTube, according to data published this week by Nielsen. Roughly 80 percent of Android users in the U.S. accessed the Facebook app within the last 30 days, Nielsen reports--Android users between the ages of 25 and 34 are most active on Facebook at 81 percent, followed by the 18-to-24 segment at 80 percent and users between 35 and 44 at 77 percent.

Facebook now tops 800 million users worldwide, with more than 350 million users accessing the platform via mobile device each month.
