Flipboard for iOS adds premium New York Times coverage


The New York Times launched NYT Everywhere, a new multi-platform content distribution strategy kicking off in partnership with social magazine application Flipboard.

The NYT Everywhere initiative enables Times readers to view full articles, videos, photo slideshows and blogs across third-party applications and websites, representing the first time the venerable news outlet has offered paid subscribers full access to its content outside of a Times-owned platform. Flipboard--which has previously relied solely on free content from publishers--will authenticate all Times subscribers, leveraging new technology designed specifically for the NYT partnership. The Times and Flipboard will offer free Top News coverage to all users.

The free Flipboard app (named a FierceWireless Fierce 15 award winner last year) brings together stories, photos, news and updates from across multiple content platforms and social networks, drawing inspiration from the look and feel of traditional print publications. While Flipboard readers on tablets flip through magazine-like pages of content, the smartphone experience employs a vertical, thumb-swipe approach enabling users to access content while holding the device in one hand. Flipboard touts more than 2,000 content partners in all.

New York Times content is rolling out on Flipboard's apps for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone and iPad. Last week, Flipboard expanded to smartphones and tablets running Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) rival Android operating system.
