Gameloft bringing 'The Dark Knight Rises' mobile game to iOS, Android
Gameloft is readying the release of a mobile title based on The Dark Knight Rises, the new Batman film slated to premiere on July 20.
Gameloft issued its first Dark Knight Rises trailer Thursday. The open-world title enables gamers to play as Batman as he wages war on the Gotham City criminal underworld. Gameloft said it worked closely with distributor Warner Bros. on the game, which is optimized for both Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android.
Pricing details were not disclosed; The Verge notes that in Gameloft's annual financial report, issued in March, the publisher confirmed The Dark Knight Rises will integrate in-app purchases, fueling speculation the game may be offered as a free-to-play download. Earlier this year, Gameloft revealed that 35 million users a month play its existing freemium titles for iOS and Android.
The Gameloft title follows on the heels of a Dark Knight Rises application available exclusively on Nokia's (NYSE:NOK) Windows Phone-based Lumia smartphones. The free app includes a foursquare-based check-in game enabling consumers to identify as Batman or the film's villain, Bane. With each check-in at local restaurants or retailers, users earn points to help defend or destroy the location in question, depending on which character they select. A leaderboard tracks the progress of players worldwide, and check-in points may also be redeemed for rewards like Batman-themed ringtones. The Dark Knight Rises app also features a countdown timer and map-based theater finder identifying where the movie is playing locally.
