Multi-channel videogame retailer GameStop reported first-quarter mobile sales of $46.8 million, an increase of 290 percent over year-ago totals. The firm's mobile efforts include Kongregate, a free gaming app optimized for Google's Android operating system.

GameStop's explosive mobile growth was positive news in an otherwise disappointing quarter. Total global sales dropped to $1.87 billion, down 6.8 percent from $2 billion in the year-ago quarter. Sales in new software slipped 3.8 percent compared to a U.S. industry decline of 14.2 percent. Hardware sales plummeted 30.6 percent, and pre-owned sales slumped 7.5 percent. Release
