Google Maps 5.5 for Android adds Place pages check-ins

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) unveiled version 5.5 of its Maps solution for Android devices, adding check-ins and user rating buttons to Place pages. Android users who open a Place page from their device can now check in or out of that location via Google's Latitude friend finder service or submit a rating or review.

Also new in Google Maps 5.5 for Android: Redesigned transit station pages featuring scheduled departures for different lines, all transit lines serving a station and links to nearby transit stations. The app now supplies transit coverage across more than 440 cities.

Google Maps 5.5 for Android is available on all devices running Android OS 1.6 and up. Google notes that more than 200 million subscribers worldwide use Google Maps for mobile across various platforms and device models; speaking Wednesday at the TechCrunch Disrupt event in New York City, Google Vice President of Location and Local Services Marissa Mayer said mobile now accounts for over 40 percent of all Maps usage, and is on pace to surpass the desktop version in June.
